Niche Down or Creative Freedom?
Remember that age-old advice to "niche down"? I never really liked it.
Lately, though, it seems like the winds are shifting, and some of the pros are saying, “Hey, maybe you don’t need a niche after all.” Honestly, this feels like a breath of fresh air to me.
When I started my entrepreneurial journey back in 2020—like so many of us—I thought I’d launch a drop shipping store. My vision was to sell items like yoga mats, sage, and journals that would help people live more authentic, spiritual lives.
But as I got deeper into it, I quickly realized that I didn’t have the expertise to sell these products with the authenticity they deserved.
So, I pivoted. I decided to focus on something I knew I was good at—marketing and writing.
But who knows, maybe someday I'll combine those two passions down the line! The point is, I don’t want to limit myself.
The idea of niching down feels limiting to me—like I’m being asked to shrink myself. On the other hand, starting with one thing and doing it really well, then adding another layer, and then another, feels like I’m building something much bigger.
While there's definitely a time and place for a niche product or service, I believe we should follow our strengths and get super clear about our messaging along the way.
If you’re like me, and you want to build something that reflects all of who you are, maybe spreading your wings is the way to go.
My goal is to be crystal clear about who I'm talking to, what I'm talking about, and most importantly, WHY I'm doing it. This means everything from dynamic landing pages to online resources and blogs that connect seamlessly across the internet.
I'd love to hear from other entrepreneurs! What do you think about this shift from niches to creative freedom?
